In July 2025 I signed a two-book deal with Doubleday / Penguin Random House. I am very excited to work with Thomas Gebremedhin and the rest of the team. In the UK, Allen Lane will publish my next book, and Einaudi will publish it in Italian, and more translation deals will be forthcoming.
Obviously, this was an exciting development, and the standard thing to do in a moment like that is celebrate the deal on social media. Everyone can congratulate themselves on staying alive in the world of letters just a little while longer, before they get back to work. But I chose to remain quiet, for a few reasons; the most important one is that I thought a public announcement might complicate research and reporting. There are real incentives and pressures to publicize immediately, but I held off for a while, in order to give the work some space to develop. Enough has now been done, however, that I can finally share.
In reality, the deal was not kept secret; if you are a subscriber to the industry trade journal, you got a little notice; but for everyone else, it remains behind their paywall ( — which means that, and this is is relevant to the topic at hand, if you drop “Vincent Bevins next book” into Google or an LLM, the robot doesn’t have an answer).
Now for the details of the books, which I can share with paid subscribers (that means, intentionally, they will remain behind a paywall). If you find that annoying, you can take comfort in the fact that contributions to North South Notes are used to fund original writing, editing, and reporting around the world. If you find it unaffordable, send me a DM to get the very cheap solidarity rates we offer to supporters living in the South, or surviving on low incomes in the North. If you are convinced you need a full subscription, but cannot pay, tell me that and I’ll probably let you in. But you can also just wait, as I will obviously make all of this public eventually.
